Arkin - L&D Manager – Sales and Service
When I joined Harrods...I have to admit I was blown away.
Questions we asked Arkin:
Hello, who are you?
"My name's Arkin Sali, and I'm the Lead Consultant in Education and Development."
What sort of training can I expect?
"Our training is really varied, so we will look after people from the moment they join Harrods. So as a sales associate you have a three day induction where you're off the shop floor, with us for three days so we can totally immerse you into what Harrods is all about before letting you loose on the sales floor."
What's the first thing I need to know?
"The first thing that people are told, is really about the wonder and the magic of Harrods. We really try and explain what Harrods is all about, what we're trying to achieve. We'll go through our mission and get people to see what an amazing place this is that they've joined, and that they should feel really proud that they've come to work for Harrods."
How was your first day?
"Thinking back to my first day, if I'm honest, I think I was a little nervous. I joined at the most crazy time. I joined two days before Christmas, so I was caught up in this maelstrom of last minute shoppers buying their last minute Christmas presents. But behind the scenes we were all action go for preparing for the sale, so it was a double whammy really, so a really crazy time to join, but really fun."
Did Harrods live up to your expectations?
"I'm not quite sure what my expectations were when I joined Harrods, but I have to admit I was blown away by the sheer size of Harrods, the varied products, the varied departments, and how much goes into making Harrods happen on a daily basis."
Is Harrods the place for me?
"Are you interested in people? Are you interested in retail? And are you interested in having days where you never know what's going to happen next? If you're not then this probably isn't the job for you. But if you are, then do it - 100 per cent do it, and throw yourself into it."
