A Day in the life of Carli - GSM Beauty

Describe a typical day in the role?

The Beauty of Beauty is the variety it brings each day. I can start with the basic retail principles of reviewing performance from the previous day to see which brands have exceeded expectations, conduct a morning brief with my management team to cascade key messages, walk the division to ensure we’re ready for the day ahead and check standards are being adhered to. The remainder of my day can vary depending on what assortment of meetings I have planned in; which could be a trade meeting with other parts of our business unit, a brand meeting or, a one to one with someone from my team. As part of my role, I also work alongside the other General Sales Managers with store wide projects to progress various work streams within our Retail Ambition.

What skills do you need to excel in your role?

Self-awareness, humility and being comfortable in your own skin are all integral attributes which I encourage any leader to possess. All of these allow you to relate to anyone inside or outside your team. 

On top of those you need an amalgamation of skills, which I like to think of as beauty products; Your smile, no beauty lookis complete without this and I consider this the beginning to the motivation of your team, mascara emphasises your eyes which are the window to your soul and the grounding of your integrity, foundation is your confidence layer allowing you to inspire your team through your delivery, lipstick is the frame for communicating at all levels in a powerful manner and eye-shadow is your innovative and creative side allowing you to devise strategic plans and solve problems through analysing and observing. You cannot apply any of these without a comprehensive skincare routine, this is your drive for results and the fundamental reason we work in this business.


What is the most challenging aspect?

Wanting to split myself into four people, so I can spend more time with my team, the brands, my son and having more time for myself!

What’s the most interesting thing to happen to you during your time here?

I was asked to present to all senior managers of our brands at a Beauty breakfast and introduce them to our Retail Ambition. It was a brilliant opportunity to establish myself as the new General Sales Manager for Beauty so soon after joining the business. Alongside that, Huda Beauty launching in store in my second week was incredibly exciting. I’ve followed her for some time and to be the first store to range her products in London was a great experience.

What do you love about Harrods?

I love that I feel proud to walk into work every day, in an environment which embodies luxury and exceptional service. Although the store is such a large space, it very much feels like I’m part of a family!
