From Temp to Personal Shopping Coordinator - Meet Ami

Ami started as a temp at Harrods. He’s now joined us permanently and is working as a personal shopping coordinator.

What does a day in your role look like?

Typically, a day starts with either your assigned Personal Shopper or Private Client Manager briefing you the day ahead, letting you know which clients are coming and if they require a pre-selection or not, we then go onto the shop floor and select the items the client has requested or items they may want. Which can range from fashion to homewares. Within the Penthouse or By Appointment suites we 'dress' the room with the clients chosen items. When the client arrives the shopper or PCM will guide them through the rest of the appointment and we will be on hand supporting them if the client requires any other sizes or items, or help with styling.

What challenges do you face in your role, and how do you overcome them?

I always compare By Appointment to the stock exchange trading floors you see in the movies, the buzz and momentum keeps everyday exciting, The challenge then being, keeping focused on the job at hand whilst ensuring a great experience for our clients. We are lucky to be in a place where we can think outside the box and offer bespoke solutions to meet their needs, so we always need to ensure we stay at the top of our game and do just that.

“Our exclusives and collections surpass most other department stores and when you enter you know you are somewhere special.”

What advice would you give to someone who wants to progress in Harrods?

For someone wanting to progress, those age old clichés for once, ring true. Keep your eye on the ball, always look out for opportunities on the careers website. Keep working hard, network and maintain great interpersonal skills, ultimately that's your biggest asset and the one you are in control of the most. Being under one roof you never know, your next customer could be your next colleague.

What’s your favourite thing about Harrods?

My favourite thing about Harrods, is being in the best place in the world for fashion. Our exclusives and collections surpass most other department stores and when you enter you know you are somewhere special. Having come from a completely different career, where I worked in Oil and Gas engineering, I was nervous entering a completely new environment, but I am happy to say I had nothing to be nervous about. I am lucky enough to say I work with an amazing group of people, always on hand to help, we really are 'one big team'.
