Meet Matt - Campaign Analyst and HMP Gradutate

Matt, Campaign Analyst in the Customer Insight team tells us about his role and his development journey through the Harrods Management programme. This programme is designed to assist individual contributors with high potential to successfully transition into their first Management level role. The programme aims to develop the skills and values required to successfully perform in this first line management role.  It is also designed to assist the process of transitioning into a qualitatively more demanding role.

Describe a typical day in your new role

My role is very varied and we receive a lot of ad hoc requests from all over the business for customer insight. We could then be doing anything from calculating a targeted customer selection for a new campaign, analysing data to select a winner of a competition or carrying out a post-campaign analysis.

What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?

I’m working with some new software I haven’t used before I make sure I’m not afraid to fail first time and have as many goes at possible until I start getting it right. Being inquisitive, talking to and learning from experienced members of the team also really helps.

You've recently completed the Harrods Management Programme, can tell us about it?

It was a thought-provoking, adrenalizing journey rolled into 9 months of fun. An eclectic range of delegates from all over the business are involved and it provided an incredible opportunity to grow my internal network and a great chance to work with inspiring people from all around the business, from my fellow delegates to senior stakeholders. From developing presentation skills, to carrying out challenging conversations, to exploring psychological tests  to help understand yourself as a professional, I learnt a broad range of skills which will undoubtedly help me not just from a professional standpoint, but a personal one too. Delivering the final project with my group and knowing that our recommendations were genuinely be taken into account and will be put into action to help the business develop was definitely a highlight for me. 

What have you learnt from the programme and how it will help shape your career?

The programme doesn’t try to turn you into a robot- one of the most important teachings for me was not to feel pressured to tailor your professional personality to how you think you should be, but the importance of developing your own individual management style based on your unique quirks and individualities as these are your most valuable assets. I will ensure I utilise these throughout my career and stay true to myself and my values.

What does it take to be selected for this programme?

It’s a privilege to be recommended for the programme as it’s recognised and respected around the entire business.  As a business, Harrods is very keen to develop internal talent and if you show drive, initiative and are not scared of a challenge, then opportunities will come. Then it’s up to you to throw yourself at these and challenge yourself from the offset and throughout. 

Why Harrods? 

Harrods is not only a workplace but also a school. And you get huge opportunities to do career moves. For me the latter doesn’t necessarily have to be progressive, I'm not scared to move laterally for the right job and career path and Harrods makes this possible.
