UNIQUELY YOU TOGETHER HARRODS

Meet Sofia- Employee Experience Intern

As part of her university placement, Sofia came to work at Harrods to carry out employer brand research work.

My experience at Harrods

Studying and working in London has been one of the most incredible experiences I had so far in my life. I had the opportunity of working at the most unique department store – Harrods – for three months and apply many of the technical skills and knowledge gained throughout my year at Cass Business School.

"I gained a deeper understanding of the luxury retail industry and how Harrods business operates and thrives in a competitive world."

In an era in which digitalization, big data and internet of things are predominant words, companies have to invest in strategic tools that allow them to distinguish themselves in the labour market. Organisations are realising that attracting and engaging constantly with their employees is, as important as, engaging with their own consumers. I worked in the area of Employer Branding that combines marketing techniques to the Human Resources function of a company aiming to attract and retain the most talented workers. It was a very interesting and unique experience and I had the support and pleasure to work closely with the Head of Employee Experience.

Every day at work was different. The first few weeks involved a deeper research and understanding behind what the Harrods brand really meant for customers and employees, and of course unveiling the Employer brand goals and strategies to be successful. At the same time, I would support Niall with the Employer Brand project plan, identifying opportunities to strengthen our employer brand and project managing some of the deliverables.

Together with Niall, I have collected and analysed data from three target groups of employees in order to understand if there was/is a gap between Harrods Employee Value Proposition and internal and external experiences. The challenge was proposed by Niall in my final interview at Harrods, and I immediately accepted, as it instigated my curiosity to be in the centre of development of a new area of expertise for Human Resource Management.

Overall it was a great experience and I am thankful to Harrods for really making "anything possible".
