From IT Graduate to Junior Business Analyst - James' Journey

James joined us as an IT grad in 2015 after completing an IS degree and he shares what his experience has been with us so far:

When did you join us as an IT Grad?

I joined Harrods in September 2015, after completing a degree in Business and Management with a pathway in Information Systems Management at Cardiff Metropolitan University. I was excited to join a company which was so well known by so many people around the world and really wanted to get an understanding of how business really works in a major city as well as use the skills I had picked up during my three years of studying. I also wanted to be challenged ensuring that no two-days are the same - and I had read that Harrods provides this type of experience!

What did the scheme do for your career?

The graduate role at Harrods was my first job after university, but I had had part-time jobs from 16 which taught me some of the fundamental rules of business as well as developing interpersonal skills. But what the IT graduate scheme has done for me so far is that it has opened my eyes to the variety of roles possible, not just in the IT world but in the entire business and it's now helped me understand what career path I would like to follow.

My first rotation was in the Business Analysis team. I learnt so much that I stayed within the team and focussed on developing key skills in areas such as planning, analytics and communication, developing these skills along with Business Analyst specific skills has allowed me to take on more complex and business critical projects.

Tell us about your journey since joining?

Since joining Harrods I have worked with many teams, both in IT and around the business. Working on many projects to help support the business, these projects have ranged vastly from supporting the IT elements of Christmas Grotto to helping the delivery of our new internal systems infrastructure and everything in between. It’s safe to say I'm constantly challenged and have never been bored.

What has been the highlight of your time at Harrods?

My highlight during my time at Harrods so far has to be being a Harrods Award For Excellence winner, working with a team of brilliant people from lots of different business areas to deliver AliPay - a secure online payment solution. This was an incredibly fast-paced project and to see everyone’s hard work rewarded with something so prestigious was a great feeling.

What's the most exciting thing you are working on at the moment and what is next?

I have been working on the store masterplan, focusing on the Wines and Spirits room and also the Food Hall Decadence rooms, I have found this incredibly interesting as it’s been really challenging and interesting to see how Harrods is developing the keep up with the modern shopper but also working to keep the heritage and the exceptional customer experience that Harrods is world famous for.
