UNIQUELY YOU TOGETHER HARRODS

Handing over the keys

Hello, my name is Gary and I have been working at Harrods for 42 and a half years. Saturday 21st September will be my last shift in my current role as Safe Deposit Custodian, as I get ready to enjoy my retirement. It’s my pleasure to share my journey at Harrods.

It all started at the age of 21, I was interested in joining the police force, but there were no jobs available for six months. The recruiter recommended I apply at Harrods as a Uniformed Security officer, I applied, secured the role and never looked back. Once I joined I loved it so much I decided to pursue my whole career here – I was fascinated by the knowledge of everyone in the place and the opportunities to progress.

In my time here, I am proud to share that I was the youngest Security Supervisor, Security Assistant Manager and Security Operations Manager they had at the time. I always knew this is where I wanted to be and where I wanted to stay – it felt like my home. It’s like being in a town where you know everyone. I was amazed by the place back in 1977 and to this day that feeling hasn’t changed.

I remember the car bombing that took place outside the store in 1983 on a Saturday lunchtime. We all came in on Sunday to make sure the store was up and running for Monday morning, not because we were told to, because we wanted to. We are one team; committed and proud. That feeling of unity is what drives us to go above and beyond in all we do.

I have so many memories here, I met my wife of 27 years here, and two years ago my son joined as a Christmas Temp. It was only meant to be a temporary job but he fell in love with the place, funnily enough, the same way I did at his age. He secured a permanent role and I’m over the moon to share that he will be taking over my current role as a Safe Deposit Custodian. So quite literally I will be handing over the keys to him. To end my journey here knowing that my son will be filling my shoes makes me feel like such a proud dad.

When people ask me where I worked, it will always be a proud moment for me to say I worked at Harrods.

I wish the company every success in the future, it will always be a part of me.
