In the Know with IT Grads: Michael Muress

Hello, life at Harrods readers. My name is Mike, I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Hull. I am a Project Coordinator here in the Harrods IT department. I work on a variety of different projects all across the business.
After deciding that my childhood dreams of being an astronaut weren't very realistic, I wanted to pursue a career in IT as I was always interested in technology and liked fixing computers when I was growing up. Still to this day, my grandparents think I am a genius for being able to fix their internet, little do they know that all I did was turn their router off and on again. After getting a degree, I wasn't sure of which area of IT I would like to work in, so I decided a graduate scheme that offered rotations across different roles would be a great way to see what I like best.
I chose Harrods, as I wanted to get a job in London when I think of London I think of Big Ben, the London Eye and Harrods! We are such a well-known brand and have a fantastic reputation, so the thought of working at Harrods sounded fantastic. As soon as I saw they offered an IT graduate scheme I decided to apply.
I started off in the Service Management Office team where I was helping with our winter peak preparation activities by making sure everything was ready for our busiest trading period. I wanted to see what project management looked like in IT so my next rotation was in the Project Management Office where I was helping with the governance and processes within the IT portfolio.
In my final year on the graduate scheme, I was working as a project coordinator on the new Harrods website, very proud to have been part of the team that helped deliver the new website on time and without any major issues. Because of course, there are always minor ones. We work in IT.
At the moment, the team are all working from home. I can’t wait to be back in with the team when offices open up again. I think a trip to the pub is definitely on the cards.
If you’re thinking about applying to any IT grad schemes, consider what areas you would like to work in, there a good variety between them so have a think about which ones would suit your skillset best. Then make your application decisions based on them, which will help you find the right one for you.
To close, in the spirit of our employer brand ‘uniquely you’ outside of work, I am quite a good trumpet player, although out of respect for my neighbours, I don't play as often as I would like.
Good luck to anyone applying.
