In with the new Studio

You might be familiar with the newly reimagined departments in-store – but did you know another transformation has been happening behind the scenes? We have now set up shop in a new Shoreditch based studio that has been custom-built from scratch just for us.

The new premises are home to our teams who contribute to the website: production, photography, styling, copy, stock and image coordination. Together, they shoot approximately 520,000 photographs a year, including all product images for our website. 

We chatted to Ally Horrax, Head of Studio Production, about how these teams bring our website to life.

Ally, what takes place in the studio?
We schedule, shoot and write copy for all of the products you see on harrods.com every day. We also work on other projects such as shots for our social teams – an area we’re expanding – and our own-brand packaging, such as our chocolate range. Basically, if our people need photography, we’re here to help.

How does the new studio benefit your team?
Being under one roof makes us feel more connected. The space has been purpose-built to be flexible and facilitate the best equipment for our imagery. A lot of companies don’t build their own studios, but we did it to be in control of our destiny – and that really comes across. 

What’s your most memorable Harrods moment?
Definitely this! I was once told, “Harrods will never build its own studio”, but I always knew it was the right thing to do. So to be stood here having previously drawn it on a piece of paper is quite emotional. Before that, my most memorable moment was getting nominated for employee of the month in my first month at Harrods! I love that we say thank you and support each other.
