Interview with Managing Director, Michael Ward

Following our last business update, Managing Director Michael Ward shares the company's plans for the future and why he thinks it's an extremely exciting time to be part of the business. He also discusses his delight in being announced as the top retailer to work for in  2018 by company review site Glassdoor.

Many changes are happening through the store, so why do you think it is an exciting time to be part of Harrods?

We have just announced the most ambitious store development project in our stores’ history, which will strengthen our position as the world’s premier luxury retail destination. The three-year project will see Harrods redesign our famous Knightsbridge store around the shopping demands of modern luxury customers. This began in November with the recent opening of the first stage of the redevelopment of the Grade II*- listed Food Halls, and will continue with the opening of the expanded Fine Watch Room in spring 2018. Further investments through to 2020 will include the dedication of an entire floor to Menswear and Sports, an evolution of the Harrods Home department, and a large-scale expansion and investment in the Harrods Beauty Hall, which will encompass space across two floors of the store.

"All of these developments are happening in one of the busiest stores in London, with each employee remaining entirely focused on providing the most special retail experience to our customers, so it is quite an ambitious project!"

We are also in the midst of the busy Christmas shopping period, during which the store comes alive with the magic of the season. This year, we are delighted to be partnering with Dolce & Gabbana for our Christmas festivities; with an Italian Christmas Market, Windows celebrating the magic of Christmas and a beautiful Christmas tree designed by Dolce and Gabbana outside the store. It’s the busiest time of the year for the store, but hugely exciting for everyone.

We’ve just been announced top retailer employer by Glassdoor, can you share your thoughts on being so highly ranked?

We are very proud to be recognised as one of the Best Places to Work in the UK by Glassdoor, particularly as we are the highest ranking retailer to appear on the list. We are delighted to be at the forefront of our industry in providing varied and fulfilled careers in retail to our employees.

Part of what makes Harrods such a special business to be a part of is the variety of roles we are able to offer, all under one roof. From day one of their career journey at Harrods, we are dedicated to making sure our employees have the opportunity to build a meaningful and happy career here and invest in initiatives that ensure our employees enjoy a healthy working culture. We want our employees to be given the skills and knowledge they need to progress and succeed in a fast-paced environment. I think that people are increasingly looking for variety and excitement when they make their career choices, and being the most famous department store in the world ensures that no two days at Harrods are the same.
