Man on a mission

In 2018, Harrods scooped up two major awards – The Drinks Business Fine Wine Retailer of the Year and the Decanter London Wine Shop of the Year – thanks to the new Fine Wines & Spirits room. The new interactive space is the ultimate drinks destination to shop and explore, offering the best luxury products from world-leading brands. We caught up with Ed Gerard, Harrods’ Buying Manager for Wines, Spirits & Cigars, to ask him about his role and find out a little bit about the new space.
How long have you worked at Harrods and when did you first develop a taste for the wine industry?

I started in the industry 18 years ago, and I’ve worked at Harrods for six years. By the end of my first week, I was certain this was the world for me. In that time, I’d tasted a 1982 first-growth Bordeaux and a range of Leflaive Puligny-Montrachets.
What do you love about your role?
Every day is different, but the thrill of the industry is in the people and their passions. It really is a dream job. It’s a subject that straddles societal divides – and I love that. In the wine world, you have everything from farmers right through to royalty. And they are always friendly and smiling when they’re discussing wine.

What did you set out to achieve when planning the new space?
This really was a passion project where we set out to push boundaries. Our goal is to educate our audience and empower them to make informed decisions about what they are purchasing.

We are proud to have been awarded
