Why I became a Mental Health First Aider

Last year we trained our first group of Mental Health First Aiders. We’re proud to say we now have 47 employees that are qualified as Mental Health First Aiders across our sites. Read on to find out what motivated them to volunteer:
 
“I think it is really important to educate our teams on mental health.  Working in Retail, where we have a high proportion of the store’s people, we have a responsibility to our teams to be able to identify what potential mental ill health looks like. Mental Health First Aid can be the first steps in guiding people to get the right help and support.  With 75% of people with diagnosable mental illness receiving no treatment at all, any support we can offer in taking those first steps is essential. I am so proud to be working for a company that is recognising the importance of this issue.” – Valine, Retail
 
“There is still a lack of awareness around mental health issues, but it’s as important as looking after your physical health. I thought it was a great opportunity to be able to carry out training on the subject and be in a good position to provide support for those who need it.” – Stephen, Thatcham
 
“Over the past few of years, there has been a steady increase in the number of people seeking support for mental health issues whether that’s personal or work related. I wanted to become a Mental Health First Aider to become more aware and to gain knowledge on how best to support people who need it.” – Rosie, HR
 
“I volunteered to be a Mental Health First Aider because in the same way our physical health can sometimes become unwell, so can our mental wellbeing.
