Our mission is to be the number-one department store in the world for luxury merchandise. Through a combination of products, innovation and eccentricity, we aim to provide every customer with a truly unforgettable experience in our quintessentially British environment.

What made us famous

Harrods was originally opened as an East End grocery by Charles Henry Harrod in 1834, before relocating to Knightsbridge in 1849. One fateful evening in 1883, the store fell victim to a catastrophic fire – but despite this, Harrods fulfilled all Christmas orders on time and even exceeded its original trade targets. This event and the resilience and determination required to go the extra mile and exceed customers’ expectations became embedded in Harrods’ DNA.

Every year, more than 65 million domestic and international visitors connect with our brand – through harrods.com, at our Knightsbridge store, and via our Heathrow and Gatwick airport boutiques. 
Our customer base includes some of the highest net-worth individuals in the world, drawn to Harrods because they, like many others, want to experience a brand that is quintessentially British. Whether a Harrods teddy bear from our gift shop or afternoon tea in The Georgian restaurant, there is something to delight everyone

“Redefining Luxury 2021” is our plan to ensure we retain our place as the world’s leading luxury retailer. It is based around reassessing our definition of luxury, and making changes as a business to ensure we satisfy the evolving needs of our discerning customers. 
To enable this, our owners, the Qatar Investment Authority, have invested more than £200 million to help us improve our offering.
