Inside Buying at Harrods: How Ellie built a retail buying career

Posting date: 14/09/26

There’s much more to Buying than choosing great products. Behind every decision are numbers to understand, relationships to build and teams working together to bring products to customers in a way that feels right for Harrods.

Ellie, an Assistant Buyer in Seasonal, Arcade & Gifting, knows this first hand. From analysing Beauty sales to planning Christmas long before the season begins, her experience offers an inside look at Buying jobs at Harrods and the different directions a retail buying career can take.

What do Buying jobs at Harrods involve day to day?

For Ellie, the technical side of Buying is equally important. She describes a role that involves different systems, numerical information and analytical thinking, as well as plenty of conversations with people across Harrods and outside the business.

Buying isn’t simply about having an eye for the right product. There is commercial thinking behind the choices you make, detail behind the way they are managed and collaboration behind how they ultimately reach the customer.

Buying jobs at Harrods reflect that variety, with responsibilities spanning product selection, trend analysis, trade reporting, order management and working with teams across the business.

How do Buying teams work together across Harrods?

Buying may be where a product begins its journey through Harrods, but bringing it to the customer involves expertise from across the business.

Ellie works closely with Retail, Online and Studio colleagues to make sure products are visible across different Harrods channels. That means thinking beyond her own department and understanding how each team’s contribution fits together.

This is We Are One in everyday working life. Different people bring different knowledge, ideas and perspectives, but creating the strongest result depends on sharing them.

For someone at the beginning of a retail buying career, those relationships can also be a valuable way to learn. Working with different teams gives you a broader view of how an initial product decision becomes part of the Harrods experience, both in-store and online.

How fast-paced are Buying jobs at Harrods?

Ellie’s role shows just how far ahead Buying teams can be thinking.

When she spoke about her work in Seasonal, Arcade & Gifting, her team was already briefing vendors on the following year’s Christmas themes and beginning the sampling process.

Day to day, the work moves quickly too.

“The most challenging part of my role is the pace, as our deadlines can be short.”

Staying organised matters when conversations, systems, samples and deadlines are all moving at once. It also means knowing where your attention is needed most and being able to adapt when priorities change.

That care reflects We Take Pride. Whether it’s checking the detail in a report, keeping a project moving or making sure information is accurate, doing things properly can make a real difference to what happens further down the line.

For Ellie, that pace also brings variety. Different days bring different conversations and challenges, giving her the opportunity to keep learning from people both inside and outside Harrods.

How did Ellie start her retail buying careers?

There’s no single route into Buying, and Ellie’s career show that.

Ellie joined Harrods as a Buying Assistant in Furniture before moving into Seasonal, Arcade & Gifting two years later following her promotion to Assistant Buyer.

Her advice to anyone considering their next move is simple:

“If an opportunity presents itself to you, go for it or give it a try. You have nothing to lose by aiming high and having the courage to try something new or something out of your comfort zone.”

That willingness to keep discovering what you’re capable of reflects We Strive To Exceed. It’s not only about what we create for our customers; it’s also about continuing to learn, challenging yourself and seeing where your strengths could take you.

What skills do you need for Buying Assistant jobs?

Ellie’s experience show why there isn’t one type of person who succeeds in Buying.

You need to be comfortable moving between different parts of the job. One moment might involve looking closely at sales or stock figures; another could mean speaking to a brand, working with another Harrods team or keeping several deadlines moving at once.

Useful skills for Buying Assistant jobs can include:

  • Analytical thinking: understanding sales, stock and other performance information
  • Organisation: keeping track of different priorities, deadlines and product information
  • Communication: building strong relationships with colleagues and external partners
  • Attention to detail: making sure information, orders and reporting are accurate
  • Commercial awareness: understanding both product performance and the customer
  • Curiosity: taking an interest in products, trends and what is happening across your category

Technical confidence grows alongside those qualities. Ellie highlights the importance of being comfortable navigating different systems and understanding numerical data.

Where can a retail buying career at Harrods take you?

Ellie has already shown that your first Buying role doesn’t have to define the rest of your career.

You might build deeper expertise within one category, discover an interest in another part of the business or progress from Buying Assistant towards Assistant Buyer and beyond. Along the way, every new season, relationship and challenge gives you something more to learn.

What matters is being curious about what comes next and being willing to explore opportunities when they appear.
