Tammy, our Vice Chair of the Racial Equality and Diversity Network, shares her personal journey and insight into what makes belonging networks so impactful.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your role at Harrods?

 "I’ve been at Harrods for six years and currently work as an Assistant Buyer in the ingredients team. 

Outside of my day job, I’m also the vice chair for Harrods’ Racial Equality and Diversity Network. It’s been an incredible journey. 

I’ve been part of so many amazing product launches, and I’ve seen teams grow from scratch, like the ingredients team, which has been exciting to be part of."

What inspired you to get involved with the belonging networks at Harrods?

"Working at Harrods is amazing, but it’s also a huge company with so much culture and heritage. I wanted to make sure colleagues feel supported and represented. 

The network gave me that opportunity. It’s about creating a space where people feel comfortable sharing experiences and connecting over common challenges or backgrounds."

How have Harrods and your colleagues supported you personally?

 "In 2021, I was diagnosed with a tumour in my right lung and had to undergo major surgery. The support I received from Harrods, my family, and friends was incredible. 

It’s this sense of community, the support, care, and understanding, that makes our workplace so special. Belonging networks help amplify that culture, making it easier for colleagues to feel they’re not alone during difficult times."

What impact do belonging networks have on the wider workplace?

"These networks are about more than just support; they’re about visibility, representation, and creating a culture where everyone can thrive

They bring people together across teams, backgrounds, and roles, encouraging dialogue, understanding, and collaboration. Being part of the network gives people a voice and helps the company embrace diversity in all its forms."

What would you say to someone considering joining a belonging network at Harrods?

"I’d say go for it! The networks are an incredible way to connect with others, share experiences, and help shape a workplace culture that celebrates diversity. 

It’s about creating real change and supporting one another, and it’s deeply rewarding to be part of that."
